The foundation of this building was laid by the Nawab Humayun Jah on 29th August 1829 in presence of the then Governor-General Lord William Cavendish Bentinck. The construction of this building was complete in December 1837 AD. The total area of the Hazarduari complex is 41 acres. This magnificent building was built at a cost of Rs. 20.5 lacs. The Palace has 114 rooms and 8 Galleries. The architect of the building was Colonel Duncan McLeod of the Bengal Corps.

A thee days festival will be held in the Hazarduari Palce ground from 8th March, 2010. highlights of the evenings include : Kawali by ‘Warsi Brothers’ of Lucknow, Sufi-Kathak jugalbandi by Smt Manjuri Chaturvedi of Delhi, folk song by Sonojit Mondal, folk songs of ‘Murshidi’ and ‘Marfati’ genre, Kabir dohas, and also there will be songs by local artists of Murshidabad.
